Hamer played a crucial role in organizing Mississippi’s Freedom Summer alongside the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), demonstrating her unwavering commitment to civil rights and equality. She also co-founded The National Women’s Political Caucus, an organization dedicated to recruiting, training, and supporting women from all backgrounds who seek elected positions in government.
Despite facing horrific injustices, including brutal arrests and medical malpractice that left her with permanent injuries, Hamer refused to be silenced. Her strength and resilience inspired countless individuals and made her a leading advocate for voting rights. Hamer’s legacy lives on through her tireless work and her role as a number one recruiter for voting rights—a testament to her indomitable spirit and commitment to justice.
